Green Smoothies ~ Treatment

Green = Good

What: Green smoothies are, well, green smoothies. They are just like the fruit smoothies you know and love except they involve some type of leafy green vegetable such as celery, lettuce, spinach, kale etc. While it may sound a little extreme at first, once you get started and try a well made blend its hard to imagine how you lived without them. They are an effective way to get a large dose leafy vegetables and fruit into your body.

Why: Some old Greek guy said it best – ‘Let food by thy medicine and medicine be thy food’. Green smoothies are filled with nutrients (chlorophyll being a key one), but more importantly they seem to give people a little extra ‘zing’ after they drink them.

How Much: One smoothie per day (around 400mls-800mls) is enough to reap the rewards. First thing in the morning in place of breakfast seems to be the most user friendly time of day.

My Experience: (14/5/2011) I’ve been having organic green smoothies each day now for just over a month and really enjoy the ritual each morning after I meditate. I started off just using fruit and probiotic yoghurt mixed with various super foods but have since moved into adding greens. Its to early to notice an overall impact on my well being but I like the way I feel after I drink them and imagine I’ll be doing this for the long term. It’s also fun getting creative with different tastes and unlikely combinations. I’m enjoying ginger, celery, alfalfa, lettuce and orange right now.

(12/9/11) I’m still enjoying a green smoothie each day but have lately reverted to simple recipes of just leafy greens and a piece of fruit. I’ve also shifted to drinking them in the afternoons and now have a fruit based super food smoothie first thing in the morning. This still feels like something I’ll be doing for the foreseeable future.

Links: An awesome advocate for Green Smoothies is Kemi Nekvapil. She is a wealth of knowledge and this post from her blog gives lots of great advice.

A great site all about green smoothies from the family that made them famous. Some good recipes as well.

      Yeah that sounds like a wicked combo! Juicing is great but I find I have to be more careful with the ratios and combinations to make sure I digest it properly. I always end up with large amounts of ginger in my juices as well. Spicy.
